In a pre-selector twospeed auxiliary countershaft gear for motor vehicles, affording direct or overdrive, a lever pivoted at 12 and constrained by a toggle spring 15 to occupy one or other of two positions determined by stops 13 has one arm 11 controlling a double claw clutch 9 in the gear and another arm 20 carrying a roller 21 co-acting with the cam ends of two slidable bars 23, 23A, while a pin 31 on an arm 32 pivotally carried by a lever 34 is pre-selectively engaged in a recess 35 in one or other of the bars 23, 23A, the lever 34 being linked at 40 with the engine clutch pedal so that the pre-selected gear change is made effective upon depression of the clutch pedal. The pin 31 is carried in a slot 26 of a slidable plunger 25 operated mechanically, electrically or hydraulically by a manual pre-selector handle on the steering column.
