Class 136(1) In a control for variable-speed gears for cycles of the type in which a flexible cable 27 leading to the spring-loaded gear selecting mechanism is connected to a pivoted quadrant 15 having on its edges angularly spaced teeth 19, 20 which are engaged by a spring pressed pawl 21, and the quadrant is moved angularly by a pivoted finger lever 14 which is coupled to the quadrant by means incorporating a certain degree of lost motion, a spring 33 is interposed between the finger lever 14 and the toothed quadrant 15 to hold the lever normally in one limiting position of angular movement. The quadrant 15 is formed by three plates the central one of which is cut away to allow the passage of the cable 27. A peg 31 fixed in the quadrant projects into a slot or opening 32 in the finger lever 14 to provide a predetermined amount of lost motion between the lever and the quadrant. The spring 33 is a torsion spring mounted on the peg 31 and has two limbs with cranked ends 34, 35 engaging respectively with the lever 14 and quadrant 15. The spring urges the lever in the angular direction in which the lever is moved to tension the cable 27 and holds the front edge of the opening 32 against the peg 31.
