Abstract

1,248,026. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 27 May, 1970 [2 June, 1969], No. 25407/70. Heading B6F. [Also in Division F2] A mechanism to produce variable stepwise rotary movement of the drive wheel 15 of a paper feed comprises a drive shaft 10 which through gears 11, 24 rotates a lever 25 having a pivoted drive lever 26 with a cam follower 46 which can be selectively engaged with one of the cam tracks 43-45 by a lever 48. A spring 21 urges the wheel 15 and driven shaft 13 to a home position. The drive lever 26 engages a ratchet wheel 29 secured to the shaft 13 which a series of teeth one, 31, of which is of extended length and also a part devoid of teeth, at a point determined by the cam track selected. With the cam surface 45 engaged no rotation of the ratchet wheel is effected while the channel 44 produces a single tooth advance and the channel 43 a three tooth advance after the lever 26 having first engaged the long tooth 31 to move it to the surface 66 at the end of the channel 43 from whatever position it was in originally. This last action allows the taking of a sub total on the paper sheet 17 and thereafter a further cycle through the channel 43 will cause a further three tooth advance for a total. On completion of the advance of the sheet 17 a stud 62, Fig. 5, on the ratchet wheel engages a reset lever 52 to bring a surface 60 to be engaged at 64 by a pin 27 on its return to its home position to release a detent of a lever 51 to allow the spring 21 to restore the shaft 13 to its home position.
