821,948. Ratchet gearing. N.S.F. Ltd. (Oak Mfg. Co.). Dec. 21, 1955, No. 36644/55. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXXVII] A pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for driving rotary electric switches (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) step-by-step upon successive energizations of a rotary solenoid having limited angular movement and which may be constructed as disclosed in Specification 602,812, [Group XXXVII], is provided with means to prevent overshooting of the ratchet-wheel each time it is advanced one step by the pawl. Energization of the solenoid (Fig. 4, not shown) causes counter-clockwise movement of a shaft 12 carrying a drive yoke 22, a slot 24 in the yoke receiving a downwardly-extending finger 73 of a plate 57 mounted for sliding movement in the direction of its length, whereby the plate moves to the position shown in Fig. 5. The plate 57 pivotally carries on a pin 61 a two-armed pawl 64 having a tooth 65 for driving the ratchet-wheel 54 and a tooth 66 serving as a detent by engaging the side of the ratchet teeth. On de-energization of the solenoid the tooth 65 slips over the wheel and the detent 66 moves away from the wheel under the action of a restoring spring (not shown). Energization of the solenoid causes the tooth 65 to advance the wheel 54 one step, the detent 66 preventing rotation of the wheel beyond this amount. A spring 68 biases the pawl against the ratchet wheel and the latter is mounted on a stub-shaft 50 driving the electric switches.
