Abstract
1,237,976. Selective printing. EXTEL CORP. 21 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 15051/69. Heading B6F. A feeding device for intermittently advancing a tape, web or film comprises a rotary feed member 40 having friction roller or pin wheel 20 and a ratchet-wheel 21. Positive drive means, comprising a reversible stalling electric motor (13, Fig. 1) and a spring (16), rotatably urges the rotary feed member 40 in a given direction (clockwise or anticlockwise), the amount of rotation being governed by an escapement mechanism. This mechanism comprises the ratchet-wheel 21 and a single pawl member 25 having first and second pawl arms alternately engageable with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. One or each pawl arm has one tooth engaging surface 41, 44 which prevents movement of the ratchet-wheel, and another tooth engaging surface 42, 43 which receives a driving force from one of the ratchet-wheel teeth, as the rotary feed member rotates, to move the other pawl arm back into engagement with the ratchet-wheel. In operation, electromagnetic means momentarily actuates the pawl member 25 to move a first (motion preventing) pawl arm out of engagement with the ratehetwheel 21, whereby the second arm moves into engagement therewith. Rotation of the ratchetwheel then moves the second pawl arm out of engagement with the teeth, whereby the first pawl arm is moved back into blocking engagement with the ratchet-wheel, thereby completing an increment of feed. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the electromagnetic actuating means comprises a single magnet 31 with a pivoted armature 32 plus a return spring 29. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5), a magnet is provided on each side of the pivoted armature 32. The feeding device is suitable for a tape perforator, tape reader or telegraph recorder. Two feed wheels may be spaced an appreciable distance apart to advance a sheet of paper in a typewriter, teleprinter or accounting machine.
