337,178. Davies, R. V. Oct. 14, 1929. Controlling variable-speed gearing. - Gearselecting mechanism for motor cycles &c. is operated by a lever carrying a double-acting pawl, the movements of both lever and pawl being controlled by a single spring system. Freely mounted on a spindle 7 fixed to a bracket 6 are a toothed plate 1, connected by an arm 1<a> to the selecting- mechanism, a lever 2 carrying a pivoted doubleacting pawl 3, and a pair of arms 5 urged in opposite directions by a spring 11. The arms 5 press against a pin 8 on the pawl and a pin 9 on a fixed plate 4. On the lever being moved in either direction one of the arms 5 tilts the pawl 3 which then engages teeth 1<b> or 1<c>, moving the plate 1 in the required direction. On being released the lever is returned by the spring to its central position. Stops 10 limit the movement of the lever.
