Abstract

March 26, 1926, Variable-speed ratchet gearing. - A variablespeed gear for free wheel cycles comprises pedal cranks P<1>, P<2> mounted independently on the same axis and driving by pivoted links D<1>, D<2> an eccentrically adjustable transmission wheel B connected by belt or chain to the free wheel of the cycle. The speed is stated to be determined by the maximum speed impulses to the transmission wheel B, depending upon its degree of eccentricity, the free wheel allowing over-running. As shown, the wheel B is mounted on a bearing on a plate 1 pivoted at 2 to the frame and adjustable, by means of a lever V adapted to be locked in various positions. The position of the pivot 2 obviates variations of chain &c. tension.
