Change-speed gearing.-In variable-speed belt gearing for motor-cycles &c. of the expanding- pulley type, the two halves g, h of a driving- pulley are pressed together automatically by cam faces l<3> on two collars l, l<1> on the driving-spindle, and the gear ratio is reduced by increasing the belt tension to force the parts g, h apart. The pulley, which is driven by gearing k, k<1>, is mounted in a bracket d, e swinging round the crank shaft b of the engine and adjusted to vary the belt tension by a rod m. Springs may be used to press the parts g, h together in addition to the cam faces. In a modification, the expanding pulley is mounted directly on the crank shaft b and the belt tension is varied by a jockey pulley. A free-engine position obtains when the belt is sufficiently slack to slip.
