26,977. Ware, C. S. Dec. 12. Motor road vehicles.-In a variablespeed gear of the expanding - pulley type for motor bicycles and tricycles, one of the two V-shaped pulleys is mounted on a countershaft, and the other upon the engine shaft or road axle or wheel, the drive being transmitted from the engine to the countershaft or from the latter to the road wheel through a chain or gear wheel. In the drawing, one pulley is mounted on the engine shaft A and the other on the countershaft. The movable flanges C<1>, K are operated simultaneously by suitable means connected to the rod G<1>, L<1>. Sprockets N, O transmit the drive to the road wheel, the wheel O being carried on a sleeve P loosely mounted on the axle of the road wheel and capable of being clutched to the wheel hub Q. For starting the engine, the sleeve P may be revolved independently of the hub Q by the usual pedalling gear, the free-wheel clutch being screwed on the end of the sleeve P.
