Abstract

Variable-speed chain gearing; clutches, friction.-Relates to two or more speed-gearing for motor-cycles in which the changing-mechanism is mounted in the bottom bracket or a similar part between the motor and the driven wheel, and the gears are engaged by oppositely inclined wedges 12 which expand or contract split rings, an operating-spindle 7 passing through the bracket and the operating-levers 40 and change gearing being arranged on opposite sides of the cycle. The sprocket 23 driving the road wheel is secured to a sleeve 22, to which either of the chain-wheels 13, 14 may be clutched. The oppositely inclined clutch wedges 12 engage between the inner and outer parts of clutch rings 18 joined together at the points 20 remote from the split ends 19. The wedges expand the rings radially, and are adjusted by axial movement of a spindle 7 passing through the fixed hollow shaft and operated by a screw or equivalent mechanism from pedals 40. The driving sprocketwheels 24, 25 are mounted on and driven from the engine shaft by friction devices in which a spring washer 35 presses the wheel 24 against a shoulder on a hollow socket 30 secured to a coned part of the engine shaft.
