Change - sp e e d gearing ; clutches, arrangements o f ; motor-starting devices, applications of.-In a changespeed gear for motor - cycles &c., the driven shaft 2 and a parallel layshaft 7 are arranged in a gear - box 1. Loosely mounted on the shaft 2 are wheels 5, 9 gearing with wheels 6, 8 fixed to the layshaft. The wheel 5 is on a sleeve 3 driven from the engine shaft. A wheel 10, splined to the shaft 2, carries clutch teeth adapted to engage with teeth on the wheels 5, 9. This wheel 10 is in constant mesh with a wheel 11 on the layshaft, the wheel 11 being adapted to engage clutch teeth 18 on the lay-shaft. The wheels 10, 11 are slidable together by means of a yoke 12 operated by a lever 14. In the extreme positions of the wheels 10, 11, the wheels 5, 9 are clutched to the shaft 2 to give high and low speed, and in the mid-position, the wheel 11 is clutched to the lay-shaft to give an intermediate speed. Motion is transmitted to the vehicle wheels by a sprocket 19, which may be coupled to the shaft 2 by a clutch 20 operated by a rod 21 passing through the shaft 2. A pinion 23 with a one-way clutch is mounted on the shaft 2 and is adapted to be engaged by a sector 24 on a spring-controlled kick starting-lever 25.
