Abstract

8658. Didierjean, N. A. April 22, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed gearing.-In variable-speed driving-mechanism for bicycles &c., two pawl-andratchet-driven chain-wheels on the crank axle are connected by a single chain with a double wheel or two wheels on the driving-wheel hub, so that different speeds are obtained according as the rider pedals forward or backward. Loose wheels 4, 5 with ratchets 6, 7 are driven by oppositely-directed pawls 9 upon a shoulder 3 of a sleeve 2, the chain passing from the upper part of the wheel 5 to one side of the double wheel 11, round the wheel 4, back to the other side of the double wheel, and then to the lower part of the wheel 5.
