Abstract
14,277. Ewart, J. W. June 25. Driving-mechanism. -In a two-speed gear for bicycles &c., sprocket-wheels d, e are mounted on the driving and driven shafts or axles respectively, and are connected by a chain f. Either of the wheels d, e, or both, is connected with the axle by a free-wheel clutch. A toothed wheel l on the driving-axle b gears with a wheel k, mounted on a stud on the frame a and formed integral with, or attached to, a sprocket-wheel h. The wheel h is connected by a chain j with a wheel g on the driven axle, a free-wheel clutch being arranged between the wheel g and the axle. A free-wheel clutch may be arranged between the wheel l and axle b, or between the wheels k, h. When the axle b is rotated in one direction, the chain f acts as the driver, and, when the axle is rotated in the opposite direction, the chain acts as driver, the driven axle being rotated in the same direction in both cases.
