Abstract

3118. Worley, C. H. Feb. 8. Driving-mechanism ; treadlelevers.- Velocipedes are e propelled by means of a pair of reciprocating pedals, the motion of which is converted into a rotary motion of the driving- wheel. The pedals a are. attached to the levers b pivoted at the spindle c. A driving- wire, attached to a lug on the lever b, passes over the pulley f attached to the 'saddle bracket, round a driving-pulley g on the wheel axle c, a second guide-pulley h mounted transversely on the rear fork pillar, a second driving-pulley on the opposite side of the wheel axle, and thence over another saddle bracket pulley to the other driving-lever. The driving sprocket-wheels g are geared to the wheel of the cycle by means of suitable clutches arranged to come into operation as one or the other pedal is depressed. The clutch shown in Fig. 4 consists of a number of spring- actuated pawls k pivotally mounted on the rings m suitably secured to the hub, and these pawls engage with the teeth cut on the interior of the sprocket-wheel g. By varying the point of attachment of the driving-wire, the gear of the cycle may be brought up or down. The wire is attached to the lever n pivoted on the loosely-fitting collar o. The pointed extremity n' of this lever engages with the teeth of a rack p, so that, by lowering the other extremity of the lever the collar o is free to move up or down.
