Abstract

9621. Smillie, R. D. April 15. Driving - mechanism, two - speed. Bevel-wheels E, E' (or a single wheel with two sets of teeth may be employed), are fixed to the crank axle and gear with wheels D, D<2> running loosely on the shaft A. A clutch connected to the shaft A is secured between the wheels D, D', so that, by operating the hand-lever G, the clutch may be made to gear with either of these two wheels, and thereby transmit the motion of the crank axle to the shaft A, from which it is transmitted by bevel gearing to the road wheel of the cycle.
