Abstract

Variable-speed and reversing friction gearing suitable for motor-vehicles comprises a grooved friction gear i and a like internal gear j pressed together variably to allow varying amounts of slip and so vary the speed transmitted. Reversed driving is obtained through an idler a between the gears i, j. In the arrangement shown, the gear j, which is driven from the gear i, is mounted in a sliding bearing d operated up and down through a spring c from a hand-lever l. The internal gear may alternatively be secured to the driving- shaft, the other gears being moved within it.
