Abstract
482,001. Gearing for conveying reciprocating motion. BUTLERS, Ltd., and REEVES, A. Dec. 16, 1936, No. 34541. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XI] Consists in mechanism for effecting opposite movements of a driven member by successive similar movements of a driving member stated to be particularly applicable to the actuation of a pivoted or other anti-dazzle device in the head lamps of a motor vehicle by hand or foot. The driven member b is slidable in guides f, g in a support a, and has a slot i working over a pin h on the guide f. It is loaded by a spring c and has on its underside a rack d, the teeth of which are adapted to be engaged by teeth k, l of a gapped wheel j. Secured to this wheel is a ratchet wheel m, and pivoted on the shaft n is an arm o carrying a pawl p the arm being connected by pin-andslot u, v to a plunger r adapted to be actuated against a spring t by a knob s. A holding pawl is provided at q. With the parts in the position in Fig. 1, the first depression of the plunger r causes the teeth k to move the rack to the right and stretch the spring c. At the end of this movement the rack teeth remain in engagement with the teeth k and return movement of the slider is prevented by the pawl q when the plunger r is released. The next depression of plunger r causes teeth k to move the slider a small amount to the right so as to clear the teeth k from those of the rack which is then returned by the spring c. Meanwhile the wheel is rotated by the plunger r until the teeth l are in the same position as the teeth k in Fig. 1. The member b may be connected to the lamp device by a cable. A toothed oscillatory member may replace the slide b and the toothed wheel may be formed with more than two gaps.
