Abstract

779,572. Feeding metal strip. TODD, C. Oct. 17, 1955, No. 29584/55. Class 83 (4). In a strip-feed mechanism having a reciprocating gripper 12 and a clamp 34 for preventing reverse movement of the strip 14, the gripper 12 is reciprocated by a toggle 16, 17 which at or near its dead-centre position actuates the clamp 34. The gripper 12 is pivotally mounted on a block 10 sliding on guides 11 and is reciprocated by a link 22 driven from the crankshaft of a press and acting through the toggle 16, 17. As the toggle passes through its deadcentre position at the end of the feeding stroke a cam 39 on the toggle link 17 engages a block 40 reversibly secured to a lever 32 to raise the lever 32 and to cause the clamp 34 to grip the strip. When the toggle is moved in the reverse direction, a catch 28 frictionally mounted on the hub 24 of a bell-crank 21, one arm 16 of which forms part of the toggle, engages under a lug 31 on one end of the lever 32 to hold the clamp 34 closed. When the feeding stroke is started the catch 28 is moved to allow the lever 32 to drop to release the clamp 34. If the press is provided with a strip guide it is necessary to delay the gripping action of the clamp 34 to allow the guide to centre the strip. The block 40 is reversed and at the end of the feeding stroke the cam 39 depresses and passes under a spring loaded plunger 46, Fig. 8, in the block without raising the lever 32, but at the commencement of the return stroke the cam 39 acts on the plunger 46 to raise the block 40 to cause the clamp 34 to grip the strip 14.
