Abstract
1,184,916. Metal sheet feeds. C. W. CHENEY & SON Ltd. 7 May, 1968 [9 May, 1967], No. 21387/67. Heading B3W. Strip feed mechanism comprises first and second grippers, the jaws of the first gripper being held open whilst the second gripper, with closed jaws, is moved towards it and vice versa, to cause intermittent feeding of the strip through the mechanism, control means for the gripper jaws including spring means urging each jaw to closed position and a cable and sheath device operable against each spring means to open the jaws, and adjustable stops controlling the travel of the second gripper. Strip 14 is guided into the feed mechanism by adjustable rollers 23 and is supported on bosses 19, 20 of the grippers 17, 18. Channels 13 on gripper 18 slidably engage flanges 15 on the bed 11 and the gripper is reciprocated by rack and pinion drive 36, 37, the pinion being oscillated by means of a resilient crank arm 38 connected to the crank shaft of the press with which the feed mechanism is associated. The resilience accommodates variation in the path of travel consequent on adjustment of stops 24. Each stop comprises an abutment portion 24a secured to a slide 25 by a threaded bolt 26 and the abutment portions are mounted on threaded portions 28, 29 of opposite hand on a common spindle 30, adjustable by means of a knob 33. The stops are held in adjusted position by tightening of the bolts 26 and the spindle by the use of lock nuts 34. A lug 22 depending from the base 20 engages the stops 24. The fixed and movable jaws 40, 41 of each gripper are of hardened metal, one portion 41a actually gripping the strip having an insert 46 of resilient material such as hard rubber in gripper 17 to avoid marking the strip. Each movable jaw is pivoted to open position about pins 43, against the action of compression springs in housing 60, by means of a Bowden cable 51 and lever arrangement 48 (Fig. 2, not shown). The Bowden cables are actuated in turn by the press crankshaft via cams (not shown). The jaws of gripper 18 can be held open by means of a handle-operated cam 55 to allow initial manual introduction of the strip into the feed mechanism.
