[Class 100 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A device for intermittently feeding strip material such as strip metal, particularly intended to be used in the manufacture of interlocking members for sliding clasp fasteners, comprises a reciprocatable feed member including a member pivoted to a carrier and arranged for gripping and locking the strip thereto, and means for actuating the feed member including means for urging it in one direction to assume the end position of a stroke and a lever or the like reciprocatable in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction and contracting the locking member slidably so that the components of the impelling force in the two directions vary during each half cycle in such a manner that the locking member pivots on the carrier into locking position before the feed stroke begins and pivots in the opposite direction to release the strip before the return stroke begins. As shown the feed member consists of a slide 12 mounted between guides 14 and having a recess 13 to receive the strip, and a locking lever 11 pivoted to the slide 12 at 18 and consisting of two arms 16, 17 with a rod 21 screwed into the arm 17 and engaged by an adjustable compression spring 23 secured to a fixed rod 25. A horizontal lever 27 is movable about a pivot 28 by a cam 30, one end of the lever contacting a roller 26 mounted in the arm 16. The bottom of the arm 17 is cam-shaped at 20 to lock the strip in the recess 13 when the end of the lever 27 engaging the roller 26 is lowered. As this end of the lever 27 is lowered further the spring 23 urges the feed member across to execute the feed stroke. When the end of the lever is raised, since its point of contact with the roller 26 is near the bottom of the roller, the horizontal component of the thrust of the lever is small and the locking lever 11 is rotated to release the strip before the whole feed member makes the return stroke. Adjustable stops 300, 310 are provided to limit the strokes so as to adjust the length of feed. In modifications the spring 23 may act to effect the return stroke instead of the feed stroke in which case the arm 16 extends the direction opposite to the feed. The lever 27 may be replaced by a cam, and the spring 23 may be replaced by hydraulic pressure means.
