887,107. Metal-strip feeds. BERNING- HAUS, R., and BERNINGHAUS, K. Sept. 12, 1958 [Sept. 14, 1957], No. 29347/58. Class 83 (4). A strip feed for a high-speed stamping machine comprises a stationary gripper and a reciprocating gripper moved in the direction of feed in dependence on the movement of the stamping device, both grippers being opened and closed by oscillating cams on a shaft extending parallel to the direction of feed and driven by the ram, the cams acting on the movable parts of the grippers through fixedly mounted levers. A reciprocating gripper 4 and a stationary gripper 3 are mounted in the machine frame 28. The upper jaw of each gripper is spring-biased while the lower one is movable by a handle 25 to facilitate entry of the strip material to be fed. The movable gripper 4 is mounted on a slide plate 15, and a roller 20 bearing on a rail 21 is attached to the upper jaw 6. The gripper jaws are closed by a pivoted lever 33 acting through the rail 21 in the case of the gripper 4 and through an element, not shown, in the case of the stationary gripper 3, the lever being operated by a camshaft 27 driven by a toothed rack attached to the press ram. The gripper 4 is reciprocated by a connecting rod 42 to which is attached a spring-mounted member 43 slidable on a pivoted rod 39 connected to the slide plate 15. Idle rolls 50, 51 co-operate with rolls 47, 48, 49 which are driven through a one-way clutch by a rack, attached either to the housing 14 of the gripper 4 or to the slide plate 15, the rolls acting to straighten the strip material and to assist the feed.
