A bunch A, Fig. 5, made in an apron 2 of a rolling table 1 by a roller 3, is delivered by the roller 3 down into a transfer gripper 21a, 21b whilst positioned by a carrier 31 movable up and down in the gripper and operatively connected to the roller 3. As shown, the gripper has jaws 21a, 21b respectively rigid with and pivoted on a slide 24 reciprocated, between the bunch. receiving position shown and a delivery position, by a drive (not shown) from a shaft 14, Fig. 1. This shaft 14 also reciprocates the roller 3 through a cam groove and follower 12, 11 and linkage 9, 8, 5, an apron tensioner 19 through a cam 15 and linkage 16, 18, and the carrier 31 through gearing 49, 80, 81, 52, a cam 44 and linkage 41, 39, 36. In operation, as the bunch A is delivered to the gripper jaws 21a, 21b these are, as shown in Fig. 5, opened against a spring 28 by a pin 30 on the advancing roller arm 5 contacting an arm 29 on the swinging mounting 47 of the movable jaw 21b, and the bunch is arrested by the jaw 21b and rests on the carrier 31, now in its upper position. As the roller arm 5 continues to advance, the carrier 31 sinks, the tensioner 19 initially acting to press the apron 2 against the bunch. Finally, the arm 5 reverses its motion and allows the jaws 21a, 21b to close.
