Abstract
832,752. Packaging-machines. B. U. SUPPLIES & MACHINERY CO. Ltd. July 19, 1956 [July 20, 1955], No. 20954/55. Class 94(1). In a machine for inserting cotton-wool or like packing material into bottles containing tablets or like articles, the bottles are fed in line between guides 42, Fig. 1, and transferred in succession by an oscillating arm 44 to pockets 36 of an intermittentlyrotating disc 40, each bottle being carried round between guides 36, 38 to an inserting station A where it is received by a holder 96, Fig. 2. The latter is carried by a rotatable and reciprocable shaft 98 which is first raised to cause the neck of the bottle to embrace the lower end 150, Fig. 5, of an inclined guide 146 down which a rope of cottonwool is fed and then rotated in 180 degree steps so that the wool is packed evenly under the shoulders of the bottle. The shaft 98 is then lowered to allow the bottle to be removed from the holder 96 by the next movement of the disc 40 and fed out of the machine between guides 50, the inserted cotton wool being severed from the rope when the holder reaches its lowered position. The cotton-wool feeding mechanism comprises a member 148, Fig. 5, pivoted to a lever 158 and a spring link 169, the lever being fulcrumed at 160 and coupled at its other end to a link 162 actuated by an eccentric 164, 166, and the link 169 being coupled at 168 to an intermediate portion of the link 162. The arrangement is such that the end 149 of the member 148 is pressed against the rope of cotton-wool by the spring on its downward stroke but retracted clear of the rope on its upward stroke, so that the wool is fed into the bottle in a series of tucks. The member 148 is operated continuously but is normally prevented from feeding the wool by a spring-loaded pivoted arm 194 which prevents anticlockwise movement of the member about its pivot 156. When a bottle is raised to the position shown in Fig. 5, it actuates a microswitch 188, Fig. 2, which energises a solenoid 192 whose armature 200 is coupled to the arm 194. The latter is thus swung clear of the member 148 to allow it to engage the wool. The wool is severed from the supply by mechanism C comprising cam-operated shears 216 and 218 (see Fig. 6, not shown).
