Abstract

736,979. Packaging. MARTIN & MARTIN, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1953 [Oct. 15, 1952], No. 25866/52. Class 94 (1). A machine for inserting cotton wool plugs in the necks of filled bottles or jars comprises a pair of rollers 1, Fig. 1, to feed a rope 2 of cotton wool, a gripper 3 to separate pieces of wool from the rope, a carrier 5 for receiving the separated pieces of wool, means for moving the carrier 5 to a position over the mouth of a bottle 8 and a plunger 10, Fig. 2, for pressing the piece of wool through a slot in the carrier into the bottle. Preferably the insertion of the wool into the bottle is completed by second and third plungers 12, 13. The gripper 3 moves away from the rope of wool 2 along a rail 4 and the carrier 5 is moved over the mouth of the bottle 8 by an arm 6. The bottles may be mounted in trays having a central rib on which bottle clips are mounted, the trays being moved towards the machine on a conveyer belt and being fed through the machine by a sprocket 9 which engages the necks of the bottles. The movements of the roller 1, gripper 3, carrier 5, sprocket 9 and plungers 10, 12, 13 are synchronized for the correct sequence of operations.
