Abstract

760,639. Forging. WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. June 21, 1954 [June 29, 1953], No. 18130/54. Class 83 (4). A mechanism for transferring workpieces successively to dies 15-18 of a heading or like machine comprises pairs of spring- loaded gripping fingers 45 mounted on a carrier 32 moved in an arcuate path by crank-pins 27. The heading machine has a cut-off station 12 where the workpiece is severed from a stock length of rod or wire by a knife (not shown) which conveys it to a station 13 where it is pushed out of the knife and into the first pair of gripping fingers. The gripping fingers are mounted in holders 44 pivoted on pins 43 mounted on the carrier 32, and are biased to their closed position by torsion springs 47 wound on drums 49 mounted on the pivot pins 43 and engaging pins 48 on the fingerholders 44. Above their pivots, the holders of each pair of fingers cross over each other and at their upper ends carry rollers 46. For positively opening the fingers, the rollers 46 of each pair are forced apart by a wedge 51, Fig. 5, adjustably mounted on a lever 52 connected by a link 64 having ball end joints 60, 67 to a bellcrank lever 68 mounted on a pivot 69 carried by a stationary part 70 of the heading machine and biased by a spring 72. The lever 68 carries a roller follower 74 co-operating with a rotary cam 75 on a shaft 76 driven from the actuating mechanism of the heading machine. The cam 75 comprises a fixed portion 77 and adjustable plates 79 for varying the time of opening of the gripping fingers. The fingers of one or more pairs, preferably of the first pair, may be retained in the open position by a solenoidactuated finger 82 which retains the lever 68 in its right hand position. The carrier 32, Fig. 5, has a pair of transverse openings 36 in which are disposed blocks 28 mounted on bearings 29 on the crank-pins 27. The blocks have extensions 30 and are biased upwardly by compression springs 34. The openings 36 permit limited vertical clearance for the blocks 28 so as to permit the crank-pins 27 to have a slight additional movement after the carrier has been brought to rest in its end positions by engagement with stops 38. The crank-pins are mounted on crank arms 26 driven by pinions 24 meshing with a gear 20 oscillated by crank arm 22 connected to a driving link 23. Specification 671,016 is referred to.
