Abstract

947,560. Forging. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. July 9, 1962 [Aug. 29, 1961], No. 26259/62. Heading B3H. A blank transfer apparatus for a metal forming machine, such as a header, having a plurality of die stations 1-5, comprises pairs of gripping fingers 121, 122 carried by a transfer bar 15 having an arcuate movement, each pair of fingers being pivotably connected by an arm 68, Fig. 7, to a fixed pivot 64 disposed mid way between stations, whereby the arcuate movement of the bar produces a rotation of the fingers for reversing the blank. A horizontal or vertical header has a blank cut-off station 9 followed by die stations 1-5 between which the blanks are transferred selectively with or without reversal by the fingers 121, 122. The transfer bar 15, Fig. 3, is mounted on two crank arms 24, 25 driven by pinions 22, 23 meshing with a reciprocating rack 40 actuated in timed relationship with the header slide. Each pair of fingers 121, 122, Fig. 7, are pivotally mounted on a yoke 123 carried by a rotatable tube 86. The fingers are pre-adjusted by screws 134, 135 and biased to closed position by a spring 92 acting on rod 91. For opening the fingers the rod is raised by a lever 62 pivoted to brackets 158 or the arm 68 and actuated through a spring-loaded lever 59, Figs. 14, 15, by double adjustable cams 71, 72 on shaft 39. When it is desired to reverse the blank during transfer, a locking bar 113 is moved to an upper position, whereby the arm 68 is connected to tube 86, Fig. 7, for rotating it. If the locking bar is moved to a lower position the arm is free to pivot idly on its bush 119 without reversing the blank. The entire transfer mechanism may be swung upwardly about the shaft 39, Fig. 15. Another embodiment is described, Figs. 16-22 (not shown), for use on a vertical press. U.S.A.
