Apparatus for applying in one cycle of operation a cigar wrapper leaf to a cigar bunch comprises rollers 6 mounted for reciprocation under a leaf holder and is provided with a movable guide roller 77 and movable guide plate 76 which form a composite guide member. Two suction leaf holders are provided (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) together with two cutting dies. Leaves are placed on the dies, over which rollers run to cut out wrappers of the desired shape, and the leaf holders oscillate alternately between a position where a wrapper is picked up and a position where the wrapper is to be released for rolling. The rollers 6 are mounted on a support 44 which reciprocates in timed relation with the movement of the leaf holders on bars 46, the rollers being driven from chain driven sprocket wheels 58 and 59. At the end of travel of the support remote from the leaf holder the rollers are opened by a stop mechanism for removal of a finished cigar and insertion of a bunch to be rolled. The guide plate 76 and roller 77 are swung about an axis 78 on arms 80, pivoted on a shaft 79. Movement of the guides if effected by an arm 81 and two-armed lever 86 having cam followers 82 and 88 respectively which run over cam surfaces 83 and 87. A roller 89 for forming a conical end to the cigar is provided on a swingable lever 90 controlled by a two-armed lever 92 by means of a cam follower 93 and cam surface 94. The leaf holders are provided with valve controlled blowing orifices, as well as suction, for progressively releasing the wrapper into the rolling mechanism. In operation, after the bunch has been introduced to the rolling mechanism, movement of the support 44 towards the underside of one of the leaf holders begins. When the support 44 reaches the leaf holder the plate 76 and the roller 77 are swung in and the lead-in flap of the wrapper released from the holder. Shortly afterwards the roller 77 is swung upward slightly so that a toothed wheel 95 thereof engages a rack on the underside of the holder and the roller is thereby driven. A flag portion of the wrapper for forming a conical end is then released from the holder and the pressing roller 89 moved by the cam 94 to its operative position. The plate 76, roller 77 and roller 89 are kept in their operative position as shown by locking their members during the remainder of the wrapping and until the end of the returned stroke. The wrapper is glued during conveyance by the leaf holder from the cutting die to the rolling station.
