Abstract
527,471. Cigar-making machines. INTERNATIONAL CIGAR MACHINERY CO. April 13, 1939, No. 11188. Convention date, May 20, 1938. [Class 130] A wrapper-carrier mechanism, is of the kind including a wrapper carrier 36 movable unidirectionally along an irregular closed path 48 from and back to a wrapper-receiving position and delivering a wrapper to a wrapping mechanism during such movement as in Specifications 504,819 and 504,820. In order to move the wrapper carrier at varying speeds along different'portions of its path, or to interrupt its movement at certain points in its path, the driving mechanism includes means operative upon an element of the mechanism to modify its operation at certain points. As shown, the carrier 36 is secured to a flanged sleeve 35 rotatably mounted in the free end of an arm 33 pivotally connected by a bolt 34 to a hollow arm 31 secured to the lower end of a hollow shaft 25, which communicates through a hollow arm 23 and a hollow column 10 with a suction device. An arm 42 on the free end of the arm 31 travels in a cam groove 45 in a stationary cam 47, and a shaft 39 secured to the member 35 extends through a bearing in the arm 33 and carries a member 40 having a roller 44 travelling in a groove 46 in the cam 47. A shaft 17 extending through the column 10 is continuously driven at uniform speed and carries a gear 13 loosely mounted on a bushing 12 and meshing with a gear 14 on the shaft 25. A smaller gear 16, integral with or pinned to the gear 13, is engaged by a toothed segment 19 which is pivoted on a stud 22 on a driving member 28 secured to the shaft 17 and has an arm 20 carrying a roller 21 engaging in the groove 27 of a stationary cam 26. An arcuate slot 29 in the gear 13 accommodates the stud 22 &c., and a stationary pointer 30 secured to the cam 26 coacts with graduations on the edge of the member 28 to facilitate assembly. In operation, while the roller 21 travels in a concentric portion of the groove 27, the arm 20 is stationary with respect to the members 28, 16 and the members 28, 20, 16, 13 rotate as a unit, the gear 13 driving the shaft 25. When the roller 21 is moved towards or away from the shaft 17, the arm 20 causes the gear segment 19 to impart a turning movement to the gear 16, increasing or decreasing the speed of the shafts 17, 25. The decrease in speed may be sufficient to hold the carrier stationary for a time, for example at the wrapper receiving and pasting positions. To effect a turning movement of the carrier at the end of the wrapper delivery movement, a slot 52 and a right-angled cam groove 53 in the ends of the member 40 coact with rollers 55, 56 on studs carried by the stationary cam 47. This movement is needed only if the tuck end T and the flay end F of the carrier are at the right and left respectively in the wrapper receiving position as shown in Fig. 2. A partition 57 dividing the wrapper carrier into front and rear chambers has an opening closed by a weighted door 58 pivoted on a shaft 60 carrying a roller 65 engaging a cam member 67 on the arm 31. The door normally rests in open position against a stop 59, but is closed by the cam at a certain point in the delivery movement of the carrier and is then held by suction until the suction effect is cut off.
