Sausages.-A machine for twisting and crimping sausages comprises a housing 16, an inlet tube or guide 22 for the filled casing 31, and a rotor 45 carrying twisting and crimping mechanisms which receive the casing 31 and operate on it during its movement towards the discharge shoot 32 which is positioned in the opening 33. The casing 31 is assisted in its passage through the guide 22 by rotary intergeared members 23, 26 which consist of bars 23<1> secured between discs, the members 23, 26 projecting slightly through apertures in the guide 22. The twisting and crimping units A are secured at intervals to the rotor 45 and each consist of elastic belts 54 trained around rollers 49, 52, 53, 55, the rollers 49 being corrugated and mounted on shafts 48 which act as pivots for arms 51 which carry the other rollers. The rollers 49 are each in two sections divided by a housing 50 which contains interconnecting gearing for the opposing sets of rollers 49, and each unit A is therefore provided with two pairs of belts 54. The rollers 49 are driven from a stationary toothed wheel 62, Fig. 4, through gearing 61, 59 and the arms 51 are moved towards or away from each other by a toothed rack 66 which is reciprocated by the engagement of a roller 65 with a stationary cam groove 64, the rack engaging with a toothed segment 67 on one of the arms 51 which is also meshed with a segment on the other arm. The rollers 55 are spring-actuated to control the belttension. The crimping-means comprise triangular bifurcated members 68, preferably of celluloid, pivoted at 69 to the arms 51 and connected together by a pin 71 which passes through slots 70 in the members 68 and also through a slot 72 in a stationary guide 73. In operation, the casing 31 issuing from the guide 22 is positioned between the belts 54 and the members 68 which then close to engage it. The crimping-members 68 hold the ends of each sausage whilst the belts 54 effect the twisting which is continued until the belts open to release the casing 31 immediately prior to discharge. The members 23, 26 feed the casing into the machine faster than the speed of rotation of the members A, the casing being thus allowed a suitable. amount of slack. The members 23, 26 are driven by a two speed mechanism, each speed corresponding with a predetermined length of sausage link.
