Abstract

615,617. Twisting wires together. STEVENS, A. H. (Gerrard Steel Strapping Co.). Sept. 14, 1944, No. 17607. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups I and XVII] Shearing-adjuncts.-Relates to an automatic wire-tying machine (see Group I) of the type in which a wire is looped about an article to be bound, drawn taut under tension, twisted to form a tie, and cut beyond the ends of the tie to remove the surplus end portion and disconnect the tied portion from the supply. The twisting mechanism comprises a radiallyslotted pinion 79, Fig, 32, which is journalled in a two-part casing 273 between holding yokes 80, and is rotatable through reduction gears 81, 82, 83, Fig. 12, from a sector-shaped gear 84 on a camshaft 85, the length of the tie being determined by replaceable filler blocks 86. Beyond the yokes, two adjustable cutters 87, Fig. 11, each adapted to sever only one of the overlapped wire portions, are secured to L- shaped holders 88, the lower ends of which engage laterally-elongated slots in a slide plate 89 operated by a cam-follower 90 from a grooved cam 91 in the cam-shaft 85. Immediately beyond the cutters 87 are two sector-shaped plates 92, Fig. 34, provided with wire-holding and wire-ejecting fingers 93, 94, and secured to a rockshaft 95 having a pinion 96 meshing with a rack 97 on a lever 98 which is adapted to be rocked to rotate the pinion by means of a cam and follower device driven from the camshaft 85. The wire is drawn from a supply by feed rolls 46, Fig. 2, and passes through a flexible tube and thence to a looped track 39 surrounding the article to be bound. The leading portion of the wire, after it has been fed around the track 39, is carried by a gripper 160, Fig. 32, to a position overlapping that portion of the wire entering the track, and the two portions are then urged by the finger plates 92 into the slots in the twisting pinion 79 and yokes 80. With the leading end of the wire held by the gripper 160, the wire feeding rolls are reversed so as to strip the wire from the track and tension it around the article. The sector gear 84 is caused to rotate the twisting pinion 79 through three complete revolutions and part of a further revolution in order to set up an over-twist in the tie, after which the pinion is returned through part of a revolution to bring the slot into its original position. The cutters 87 are then operated by the cam 91 so as to sever a single strand of wire at each end of the tie, and the finger plates 92 are swung forwardly in order to force the completed tie away from the twisting pinion and yokes. Specifications 615,657 and 615,658 are referred to.
