Abstract

325,783. White, A. E., (Consolidated Steel Strapping Co.). Aug. 17, 1928. Parcelling by bundling. - In a machine for applying wire ties around boxes or handles and twisting the ends into a flat splice, the applications of the wire is effected by a revoluble ring which carries the wire to encircle the package in one direction, and carries the cut-off end back to the starting position in the other direction, during the twisting operation. The cycle of operations is diagrammatically shown in Figs. 32, 34, 35, 36. The free end of the wire tie g, Fig. 32, is clamped by a gripper A against the underside of a table on which a package. h is placed in position. The wire passes through a shuttle F, reversely round a grooved wheel d, and round rollers c, b to a source of supply. The shuttle F and rollers b - - e are mounted on a shuttle ring a, which now rotates in an anti-clockwise direction to apply the wire to the package as shown in Fig. 34, a gripper B rising and clamping the wire after the passage of the shuttle. A gripper C rises and clamps the wire, at the same time severing the free end to the correct length. On travelling into the position shown in Fig. 35, the wire is laid beside the first strand in a twisting mechanism i and is clamped and severed by a gripper D adjacent the gripper B. This leaves a new tie end j, which is carried by the ring in a clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 36, back to the original position shown in Fig. 32, while the twisting operation is taking place. The wire is fed from a reel through a plate 53, Fig. 27, past straightening rollers 54 - - 58, adjustably mounted with respect to one another, and several times under and over a series of grooved pulleys 35, 36 and thence to the rollers on the shuttle ring. A rod 40 having stops 42, 43 limits the movement of the lever 47 carrying the shaft 38 of the lower series of pulleys 36. A package is next placed on the table 2' against a positioning plate 7, against which it is held by a pusher plate 210. The machine is started by depressing a pedal 246, the first operation being the raising of the clamp A, Figs. 8 and 32. The shuttle ring starts slowly, being driven by a crank pin 84 through gearing 90, 93, 94, 96, 99, 100, stops and starts slowly at the end of the half cycle, and stops slowly at the end of the operation. After the wire has been carried round the package to the position shown in Fig. 34, the clamp B rises and a movable track 109, Fig. 27, is engaged by a roller 203 on the shuttle to move it away from the centre of the ring. The parts a - - e in Figs. 34 - - 36 correspond to the parts 4, 101 - - 104 respectively in Fig. 27. The clamp C, Fig. 8, rises and severs any surplus from the free end and the clamp D co-operates with the clamp B to cut off the tie length, a horn 129<1> holding the wires singly together. A spring 136 throws off the end 137 in the shuttle and the ring rotates back to the original position as previously described. A gear 124, Figs. 8 and 9, is rotated two turns to produce the joint shown in Fig. 26. The gear is slotted to receive the two wires at the centre of the joint and is mounted in sliding bars 142, 143 and is rotated by a rack bar 144. It is stated that by a suitable design of the spring 136 or of the grippers 129, 132 the end of the new tie may be bent so that eventually both free ends of the tie will lie on the same side of the finished splice. Upon the completion of the splice, pushers 138, 139 advance and parts the tie off the horns 122, 123 and advance the package slightly, the pusher 210 being released to allow the package to move. The package is ejected by raising a series of rotating discs against the base thereof.
