MEANS FOR BANDING PACKING CASES.

To all whom t may concern:
- Be it known that l', GUs'rAv HUGUENTN, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, re-' siding at Cham, Switzerland, have invented l certain new and useful Improvements in eans for Banding Packing Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' This invention relates to means for pro- 19 ducing and applying endless binding hoops or bands applicable generally where such bindings are employed 4but more particularly intended for use in connection with packing cases of the kind in which merchandise such as condensed milk is contained for the purpose of transport.
The present invention has for its object to provide a device which is adapted to sever a strip of ,material of definite length 20 the material being fed, drawn or otherwise supplied from a roll or the like and to lay or apply the same about a case, container or other object ina predetermined position and in a condition of tautness andto join $5 the ends of the strip, which are caused to overlap, by welding the same together so that an endless welded hoop or band results whereof the surface is smooth and fiat there being no apparent -ridge or projection at the aforesaid point of junction and the tension. of the band is preserved.
According to this invention the device comprises a table adapted to receive and hold the case, container or other object in a predetermined or definite position and to be straddled by a length of binding strip which is fed into and along a groove or recess formed in the surface of the table. The material or strip is contained in a roll mounted adjacent to one side of the table and when a predetermined. length has been fed' or drawn from the roll the said length is severed by a suitable cutting device orguillotine. "The severed strip is then manipulated by means of a kind of folding frame consisting of hinged arms so as to bend portionsof the same against the sides 4of the case or other object and similarly the ends of the strip are 'bent over and upon the upper surface of the case or other object so as to overlap each other. The clamping devices prevent any slackening of the strip during the operation of welding. Y
By these means the predetermined position of the binding is preserved andy its applicationeffected without destroying the tautness and close adherence ythereof about and to the case or other object.

Having obtained the length recase or other object E having been placed and positioned upon the table B the length 'of material is bent upwards along the sides of the object by turning the arms F F about their pivots f f and then by similarly turning the arm extensions F1 F1 about their pivots f1 f1 in the arms F F the ends of the said length of material arebent and brought over the top of the object the length -of to allow a lapping of the said ends one upon the other. In object E is shown 1n position with the length of strip beneath the same and extending at either side therelill of, i. e., from the cutter Dat the left-hand side to the adjustable stop C at the righthand side.` If reference be now had to Figure 2 the first stage in the binding of the strip will be observed by reason of the deection or turning of the hinged arms F F and the further bending of the strip so as to form a lapped joint is readily observable in Figure 3.
The box or object is positionedv on the table B by a block b which may be adjustable so as to admit of the band being applied at any desired distance from the side of the box or object and the table is also provided with a bracket b1 which is adapted to co-act with the aforesaid'block in holding the box or object in the desired position on the table during the application of the binding strip. The arm extensions F1 F1 may each carryv a trigger lever f1 f1 adapted to take a bearing upon the stri see Figure 3 and to permit of the parts E1 being turned up out of contact with the' top o the box or object.
Assuming the box case or other objectto be in position on the table B with a suitable length of strip in the groove or recess Bx (Figures 4 andV 5) and the said strip' bent about the box or object as above described theclampiiig levers G G are operated by means of the handle g and right and left screw threaded spindle g1 so as to grip the said strip and force the ends of the latter into close contact the one upon the other between the electrodes H H1. By means of the handle or grip' h1 the electrode H1 is pressed into iir'm contact with the ends of the 'inding strip whereupon electrical contact is established in the primary line I of an'alternating current transformer. At this moment a current of hi h intensity and low voltage ilows through t e secondary K which is carried through the ends of the binding strip from the electrode H1 to the electrode H and thereby the ends of the binding strip are immediatel welded together over a broad surface. y now reversing the movement ofthe handle g the clamping devices lGG are released from holding engagement with the strip and the aselor object having a complete hoo or binding applied thereto may be remove Devices` for butt welding wire bindings on boxes 'or containers are known in which the 1- current is conducted through clamps but certain disadvantages arise in practice owing to a part of the current flowing through the binding and passing out ineectively as regards any 'assistance to the welding operation. The binding moreover becomes heated and the container suffers burning while the tension of the binding also suffers and' when -or bands to vpacking the latter cools upon the completion of the welding a shortening thereof takes place and not infrequently rupture ensues.
By the use of separate electrodes AH H1 which conduct the current directly to the flat lapped extremities of the strip vthese objections are obviated or minimized and the binding is preserved in a taut condition the operation being conducted without risk of the binding becoming heated otherwise than at the point of welding.

Apparatus for applying binding hoops or bands to packing cases, com rising in combination a table adapted to ho d the case in redetermined position, a groove in said tab e for receiving the binding strip and positioning the latter beneath the case, a mounting for a roll of said strip, an abuttin stop for said strip as same is ed from sai rol and a cutting device for securing the fed strip fromA the roll; a folding frame mounted on the table and consisting of hinged arms adapted by manipulation to bend portions of the cut strip against the sides of the case and other portions of the strip on the top of the said case with the latter portions lapping the one over the other; a welding means consisting of separate electrodes adapted to conduct the current directly to the flat lapped extremities of the binding strip, and clamping devices for holding the said lapped extremities in position while being subjected to the welding o eration.
2. Apparatus for applying inding hoops or. bands to packing cases, comprising 1n combination a table, a block thereon adap to hold and position the case, a roll mounted for rotation in suitable relation to said table, a groove in the table for the reception of the length of material drawn and a cutting device j for se arating the length from the roll, laterally isposed arms pivotally mounted on the table, arm extensioiis (pivotally connected with they first mentione arms and trigger levers ada ted to take a'bearing upon the portions of tlie strip lying on the top of the case, clamping levers for gripping and contacting the over-laping ends of the strip, a'handle for operating the said gripping levers, a pairof electrodes disposed respectively abo theaforesaid over-lapped portions, a depressing handle for the upper electrode, and
means for supplying current to said elec;
trodes for effecting the welding of the lapped ends of the strip which constitutes the binding hoop or band. i 3. Apparatus foi` applying binding hoops i comprising in combination a table, a bloc and a bracket associated with said table .for holding the case in position on the table, va groove in the table, a gauging stop adjacent one end of the ve and below l from said roll, an abutting' stop for determining said lengthv table, a cutting device adjacent the other end of the table and a mounting for a rotatable roll of binding material near the cutting device, the arrangement being such that a' predetermined length of said material is cut from the roll and occupies the said groove in a position in which it straddles the under side of the case held on the table, laterally disposed arms pivotally mounted on the table, arm extensions pivotally connected with said laterally disposed arms and trigger levers adapted to bear on the portions of the strip lying in superposed or over-lapping relation on the top of the case, clamping levers for grippin and contacting the over-lapping portions o spindles associated with said levers and an the strip, screw e a pair and the aforesaid lapped portions a depressing handle in operative the upper electrode and means for supplying current to said electrodes for effecting the welding of the lapped ends of the strip which thereupon constitutes an endless binding hoop or band whereof the junction point is smooth and flat and the tension maintained.
