Thisinvention relates to case-tie or like fastenings and has for its chief object to provide a method of and means for securing case-tie or like fastenings without twisting the ends of the wire and which will enable a saving in the length of wire used for each tie.
According to the invention, the wire around the case or package is applied and 1n the ends -united by means which permit of the adjacent or abutting ends of the wire being secured together in the same plane. In carrying the invention into effect, the free end of the wire from which the case-tie is to be made may be held by a clamp,-whilst the length of wire is taken or passed around the case or package and brought toward the fixed end. The wire thus brought or passed round the case may be secured in another similar clamp adapted to be adjusted toward the fixed clamp so as to draw the wire tightly round the case or package. When the required adjustment or tensioning of the wire has been effected, the wire passing through or held by the adjustable clamp may be out after a suflicient length to reach the end held .in the fixed clamp has been determined. The two ends may be brought together side by side or into alignment or so abutment in front of a die and after a sleeve previously threaded on one end of the wire has been moved to envelop or cover both ends, a movable die is actuated to cooperate with the other die and operate on the sleeve,

Referring now to the drawings, the two ends of the wire a to be secured are brought together within a sleeve Z), see Figures 1 or 1, and in such a position that the sleeve 6 and wire a are crimped as shown in Figures 2 or 2. In an embodiment of the invention the machine or apparatus for effecting the carrying out of the invention may comprise a frame 0 upon which is mounted the two clamps for holding the wire a during the banding or baling operation. Said clamps may consist of pivotedlevers (Z, 6,
adapted at their lower extremities to coop crate with lips or flanges f on the frame 0 to grip or hold the wire a, the otheror upper ends of the levers being adapted to afford handles for manipulating the clamps to hold and release the wire a. The adjustable clamp d may be supported by a slide block 9 in the frame 0 and a screw it, ratchet .or other appropriate means may be provided for efiecting the adjustment of the clamp 62. The fixed die 2' on the frame 0 may be mounted between the clamps (Z, a and near the fixed clamp e, whilst the movable die j may be hinged (see Figure 5) to the frame 0 above the fixed die, and be ofv such a character that when swung down- Ward it will act with suflicient force to squeeze the sleeve 7) with the ends of the wire 0; therein against the fixed die Both dies may be serrated, roughened or otherwise formed so that they produce indenta tions Or corrugations in the sleeve 7) and wire ends a to bind the same securely together.
The rear of the frame may be provided or formed with a lateral extension or handle for holding the machine when in use or for carrying same from place to place.
7 With this invention the application of case-ties to cases of any size from a coil of wire is rendered an easy and simple opera tion as with the machine in position on the case or package, the .free end of the wire may be secured by the fixed clamp 6 with its extremity lying central to the fixed die 2', the movable die being meanwhile raised to facilitate manipulation of the wire a. lVith one end of the wire thus held the length of wire from the reel or remaining portion of the case-tie is passed around the package and secured in the movable clamp d, the latter being adjusted to tighten the wire a and at the same time draw the two ends to be secured together. Vhen the required adjustment has been effected and the ends brought together within the sleeve 7), the hinged or pivoted die j is brought into operation or allowed to swing down to squeeze the sleeve 6 over the ends of the wire whereupon the clamps (Z, 6 may be released, the hinged die j raised and the machine removed.
F or enabling the hinged die j to exert sufficient pressure or additional pressure to that resulting from the falling of the die, the latter may be provided with an inwarc ly projecting tongue Zi, adapted to enter an opening in the machine into the path of a cam Z carried by a lever or handle m, the cam Z engaging a slot in the tongue 7: when the lever m is raised to thereby cause the hinged die j to be drawn towards the fixed die 2'. To enable the tongue /a, to freely enter the opening in the frame and thus accommodate itself to the movement of the hinged die 7' it is pivoted to the die and engaged at its rear extremity by a spring a. For severing the wire a when a sufficient length has been determined a cutter 0 is provided, said cutter being actuated by a handle 39.
I claim 1. I11 an apparatus for securing wire ties to packages and the like, the combination of a frame, a fixed clamping member connected to the frame, a slidable clamping member connected to the frame, means for moving said slidable clamping member relative to the fixed clamping member, a stationary die between said clamping members, a movable die hinged to said frame, and coacting with the stationary die for crimping the wire held by said clamping members, an arm pivoted to an intermediate portion of said movable die and having a free end arranged to extend transversely of the frame, and means operatively associated with the said free end on said arm for forcing the movable die toward the stationary die.
2. In an apparatus for securing wire ties to packages and the like, the combination of a frame, a fixed clamping member connected to the frame, a slidable clamping member connected to the frame, means for moving said slidable clamping member relative to the fixed clamping member, a stationary die between said clamping members, a movable die hinged to said frame at a point above said stationary member and coacting with the stationary die for crimping the wire held by said clamping members, an arm pivoted to said movable die and arranged to extend transversely of the frame, a cam en gaging said arm, and means connected to said cam for forcing the movable die toward the stationary die.

In an apparatus for securing wire ties to packages and the like, a frame member having a stationary corrugated die formed on one side thereof, a movable die hinged to the frame and co-acting with the stationary die for crimping the wire therebetween, an arm pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said movable die and having a free end arranged to extend transversely of the frame, and means engaging the said free end on said arm for forcing the movable die toward the stationary die.

In an apparatus for securing wire ties to packages and the like, a frame member having a stationary corrugated die formed on one side thereof, a movable die hinged to the frame and co-acting therewith for crimping the wire therebetween, an arm pivotally connected at one end to said movable die and arranged to extend transversely of the frame, yieldable means carried by said movable die and arrangcdto engage the adjacent end of said arm, said arm having a notched portion therein, a cam arranged to fit in said notched portion for forcing the movable die toward the stationary die, and means for actuating said cam.
5. In an apparatus for securing wire ties to packages and the like, the combination of a frame, a fixed clamping member and a movable clamping member connected to the frame, means for actuating the movable clamping member relative to the fixed clamping member, a stationary die connected to one side of the frame between said clamping members, a movable die hinged to the frame at a point above the stationary die, and coacting therewithfor crimping the wire held by said clamping members, an arm pivotally connected to said movable die and arranged to extend transversely of the frame, yieldable means on said movable die for normally urging said arm inwardly, said arm having a notch therein, a cam arranged to lit in said arm, and means connected to said cam for forcing the movable die toward the stationary die.
