Abstract
742,546. Wire &c. strainers. VEREENIGDE METAALVERPAKKING MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 20, 1953 [Nov. 26, 1952], No. 10832/53. Class 45. [Also in Groups XVII and XXII] In a machine for banding an article 1 with strip or wire comprising a clamp 2 for holding the free end of the strip or wire supply, a member 4 for wrapping the strip or wire around the article to form a band, a clamp 8 for tensioning the band and for feeding strip or wire from the supply to the clamp 2, a device 10 for joining the overlapping parts of the band, and a guide 6 ensuring that the overlapping parts are parallel to each other during the tensioning and reciprocable after the joining operation to coact with a cutter 15 to sever the supply from the band, the guide 6 co-operates with a further guide 14 to direct the free end of the strip or wire supply into the clamp 2 in readiness for the next banding operation. The free end of strip from a coil is fed over the member 4, which is a projection on a wheel 5 (Fig. 14), and is gripped by the clamp 2 so that after a complete rotation of the wheel the strip is wrapped around the article to form a band, the overlapping portions of the strip lying beneath the guide 6 (Fig. 2). After the clamp 2 moves to the left, the clamp 8 moves forwards to engage the strip then to the right to tension it. During movement of the clamp 8 the device 10 is moved forwards so that its jaws 11, 12 lie on either side of the overlapping parts of the strip. The jaws close to form a joint in the strip by deformation or by applying a seal, and the guide 6 reciprocates to project between the strip leading from the supply and the band. The clamp 2 is released from the strip and moves backwards whilst the jaws 11, 12 open (Fig. 6). The device 10 moving backwards operates the cutter which coacts with the guide 6 to sever the band from the strip supply, the free end of the strip supply being supported in a slot 18 formed by the guides 6, 14. The clamp 2 moves to the right and then forwards to be positioned at the side of the slot (Fig. 9). The clamp 8 moving to the left pushes the free end of the strip into the clamp 2 which moving to the left withdraws strip from the coil. The guides 6, 14 move backwards so that the guide 6 is above the strip whilst the clamp 8 is released and moved backwards so that all parts are in position for a fresh banding operation (Fig. 1). The main shaft 20 of the machine (Fig. 14), driven by a pulley 23, has a pinion 25 driving the wheel 5, a clutch 22 permitting drive of the other parts after the complete rotation of the wheel. A cam-shaft 27, driven from the main-shaft by worm gear 26, drives a further cam-shaft 30. The clamp 2 is slidable for movement to the left or right in a support 37 (Fig. 15) which is reciprocated by cams 31, 32 for backwards and forwards movement of the clamp, the movement to the left or right being derived from cams 34, 35 by means of a link 38 and bell-crank 39 and the connection to the bell crank being so arranged that the clamp closes during movement to the left and opens during movement to the right. The clamp 8 is moved backwards and forwards by cams 75, 76 and moved to the left or right by cams 73, 74 the construction of the clamp being similar to that of clamp 2. The device 10 is reciprocated backwards and forwards by cams 44, 45, and its jaws are operated by means of cams 46, 47, a rocking-lever 49 and a linkage (Fig. 18). The guides 6, 14 (Fig. 19) are integral with each other and are reciprocated by cams 80, 81. The cutter 15, mounted on the side of the guides, is actuated by a projection 19 on the body of the device 10.
