Abstract
759,054. Wire strainers. STRAPPINGS, Ltd., and CROUCHER, Ltd., A. H. Dec. 23, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 35883/53. Class 45. [Also in Group XVII] Wire or strip is fed into a banding machine through a guide 28 and passed about a grooved wheel B20, through a slotted pinion, (see Fig. 3, not shown), and a stationary guide ring 32 surrounding the package, the end of the wire being again passed through the pinion prior to entering a stationary gripper. The shaft 9 of the machine is driven by an electric motor (see Fig. 2, not shown), through a belt and pulley drive incorporating a friction clutch 15, 16. The shaft 9 has a worm 21 machined thereon which drives the worm-wheel of a unit having a number of cams. The pinion is controlled by the cam A and is initially rotated to over twist the wire and then reversed a small amount to free the wire in the slot. The wheel B20 is driven by the cam B through a telescopic hydraulic link and suitable gearing B1 ... B40 (see also Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 7, not shown), the arrangement being such that on the push stroke of the link the wire is pulled about the package whereupon the link telescopes and the wheel B20 stops. Cam C controls the right-hand gripping mechanism through means C1 ... C7 (see also Fig. 6, not shown). The movable gripper is initially moved to secure the wire against an anvil and then moved therewith to the right to effect tensioning. Cam D operates the left-hand gripper and the removal of the cover D9, Fig. 4 (not shown), from the track along which the wire is fed through the twister pinion, control being effected through appropriate linkage. A further cam operates the ejectors for removing the knot from the twister pinion whilst another cam operates loading fingers and cutters, the ejectors, fingers and cutters being duplicated on either side of the twister pinion. Finally, a trip cam actuates the clutch rod 18 to stop the machine, a rod G6 controlled by a foot pedal being arranged to lift the roller G5 out of the way and the clutch to re-engage. Means may be provided for disengaging the pressure wheel 29 from the grooved wheel B20 whilst the latter is returning to its commencing position. The guide ring 32 may be made of different shapes and sizes according to the packages to be catered for: Two such machines may be mounted together with their rings on a common axis so that two buildings may be made simultaneously in which case the machine cycles are synchronized so that they may be operated by one electric motor.
