Abstract

[Also in Group VII] A tying machine comprises a bundle-supporting table, a rotatable annular encircling the table in a plane substantially normal thereto, twine-retaining means carried by the annulus and adapted to hold a free end of a length of twine, so that on rotation of the annulus the retaining means encircles a bundle on the table within the annulus, thus drawing a length of twine from the supply and training it around the bundle, a knotting mechanism arranged to tie the twine around the bundle and driving mechanism for rotating the annular and actuating the knotting mechanism. The table 1 is mounted on a frame 2 having an arcuate housing 3 fitted with rollers 5 which support an annulus 4 carrying a spring-loaded clamp 15, 16 which may be engaged with the free end of twine 19 passing from a supply through a spring-loaded tensioner 20. The knotting-mechanism 8, of known type (see Group VII), is carried by a horizontallyslidable block 9 operated by a lever 10 carrying a follower 45 in engagement with a cam 41 on a shaft 31 driven through an electro-magnetically operated clutch 38 and gearing 39, 40 from a motor driven shaft 34. The latter also drives through an electro-magnetically operated clutch 37 a pulley 35 engaging a belt 36 encircling a groove 36a in the annulus 4. A second cam 30 on the shaft 31 operates through linkage 33a and a rack and segment 33 to actuate a slide 23 having a hooked end 24 adapted to draw the twine into engagement with the side of the bundle, and a third cam 80 operates a rack 14 to cause rotation of a pinion 13 which operates the knotting mechanism 8 through bevel gearing. A pivoted bar 27 is operated through linkage 26 by the slide block 9 to raise the twine into contact with the underside of the bundle. A fourth cam 42 on the shaft 31 operates through linkage 47, Fig. 4, to actuate a knife 48 to sever the twine from the supply after completion of the knotting operation. The machine may include a second annulus 204 and associated parts 204, Fig. 2, so that two lengths of twine may be trained and tied simultaneously, the annulus 204 being adjustable towards and away from the annulus 4 to vary the distance between the ties. Three tying machines 101, 103, and 104 as described may be adjustably mounted along a bundle conveyer 100 as shown in Fig. 7. Each bundle trips a switch which stops the conveyer and brings the machine 101 into operation. The bundle is then moved by the conveyer on to a turntable 102 which rises, turns the bundle through 90 degrees and then returns it to the conveyer for forwarding to the machines 103, 104, which apply two ties at right angles to the tie formed by the machine 101.
