An .object of the invention'is to provide a machine tor passing a wire' around a box or bunch oit shoolrs, drawing the wire tight and twisting the ends oil the wire.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine which automatically accomplishes theoperations ot passing the wire around the bundle, drawing it tight, twisting the ends, and cutting the wire.
Another object ot the invention is to provide means for alining and compressing the hunch of shoolrs heiore they are'hound together.
A further object ot the invention is to provide an improved mechanism for forming the wire into a loop.

Arranged at the front of the frame is a vertically movable hollow frame or gate 21 which is engaged and guided by the grooved rollers 22 journaled on the frame 2. The gate is movable upwardly and downwardly with periods of rest at the top and bottom of its reach, the movements and rests cooperating with other movements of the com'- plete mechanism. Mounted in the upper portion of the gate is a rotatable head 28, which is provided with means for gripping the end of the wire and drawing it down across the frontface of the bunch of shooks when the gate is lowered. Attached to or formed integral with the head is a sprocket 24 which is engaged by an endless chain 25 running over sprockets 26 disposed at the four corners of the frame. Movement of the chain causes rotation of the head and by stopping the rotation of the head while the chain is being driven, the gate is raised or lowered. Meshi'ng with the chain 25 is a driving sprocket 27 which is rotated in opposite directions in time with the operation of the machine, causing the raising and lowering of the gate and the operation of the head at the proper times.
Formed on the rotatable head is a jaw or projection 28 which coperates with va spring-pressed jaw 29 rotatably mounted on the head. Secured to the spring-pressed jaw 29 is an arm 31 which is arranged to contact with a latch 82 mounted on the gate 21. When the sprocket 27 is rotated in a direction to move the chain'25 upwardly at the sprocket, the chain is moved relatively to the gate and causes a rotation of the head in a clockwise direction (Fig. 6), bringing Vthe arm 31 into contact with the latch 32.
This stops the rotative movement of the jaw 29, while the head `continues to rotate, causing the jaws 28-29 to be opened. A stop 33 on the head then contacts with the arm 31, stopping the rotation of the head, so that further movement of the sprocket 27 causes the gate to be raised, the position of the head during the upward movement of the gate being shown in Fig. 6.
Before the gate reaches its upper position, the shuttle 17 has been moved to its position above the bunch of shooks as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the end of the wire 18 projects from the shuttle and lies in the path of the open jaws 28-29, so 4that when the gate reaches its upper position, the end of the wire 18 lies between the jaws. The direction of rotation of the sprocket 27 is then reversed, and due to the pressure of the spring coperating with jaw 29, the head is rotated for a short distance in a counter-clockwise direction (Fig. 7), bringing the jaw 28 against jaw 29 and clamping the end of the wire. The'head is then prevented from rotating farther by a spring-pressed stop 34 mounted on the gate and engaging in a depression 35 in the periphery of the head. The stop and the depression have sloping sides, so that an increase in turning force on the head forces the stop out of engagement.
The head is provided with a sector-shaped slot 36 extending from the periphery to the center, and the slot is so disposed that its opening occurs at the lower part of the head, as the head moves downward. The upper cross bar of the gate is open below the center of the head, so that the slot opens into the space within the gate. Before the gate reaches its lower position, the shuttle has traveled to a position below and in front of the lower forward edge of the bunch of shooks, so that as the gate descends, thc head passes down over the wire, seating the wire at the base of the slot. The gate having reached its lowermost position, is halted, but the sprocket 27 continues to rotate, turning the head in a counter-cloclm'ise direc tion (Fig. 7) for several turns. The spring latch 32 has an inclined upper face, so that the arm 31 in moving around, pushes the latch 32 back at each revolution. This rotation of the head twists the ends of the wires together, firmly securing; them and binding the bunch of shocks.
After turning in a counter-clockwise direction for a sufficient number of turns to tightly twist the ends of the wires, the head is rotated for a short distance in the opposite direction, to cut the wire. Formed on the opposite end of the jaw 29 is a knife 37 and when the direction of rotation of the head is reversed, the arm 31 contacts with the latch 32, halting its movement, and the further movement of the head brings the slot under the knife and the wire is cut. This finishes one cycle of operations of the machine, and it is automatically stopped to permit the bound package to be removed and another package to be inserted, after which the machine is again set in operation.
Journaled in the frame of the machine is the drive shaft 38 which is connected to any desirable prime mover. Secured to the drive shaft is a gear 39 which meshes with a gear 41 mounted for rotation on the shaft 58. Loosely mounted on the shaft ,58 adjacent the gear 41 is a gear 42 from which the chains are driven. The sprockets 12 which drive the chains 14 are secured to the ends of shafts 43-44 which are driven from the shaft 48, through the sprockets 45-46 and the chains 47. The sprocket-s 12 are spaced .apart and are secured to the adjacent ends of the shafts 4B-44, so that an open space is provided between the sprockets to permit the shuttle to pass. The shaft 48 is driven from the gear 42 through the gears 51, 52 and the shaft 53. Means are provided for alining the stack of shocks and for compressing them during the binding operation. Slidably arranged in the trame at opposite sides thereof are tvvo pairs of horizontal, longitudinally disposed rods 107--108, each pair of which carries a vertical bar 109 which is disposed behind the bunch of shocks. The vertical bars are provided with screw-threaded sockets 'lli liti
ltltl ltlli lltl through which screw-threaded portions of the rods eXtend, so that rotation of the rods changes the setting of the vertical bars. In order that this settin may be readily accomplished, I' provi e each rod with a sprocket 111 and connect the sprockets with a chain 112. Pivoted to the frameand engaging each rod is al bell crank lever 113 which is connected at its other'end to a rod 114, which is in turn connected to the lever 115. The lever` 115 is provided with a roller 116 on its end which engages the cam 117 secured to the shaft 58, so that as the shaft rotates, the bars 109 are moved forward against the stack'of shooks, forcing them into alinement. lSecured toshaft 58 is a second cam 118, with which co erates a lever 119 pivoted to the frame. rranged at the upper part of the frame and to one side of the open center thereof, is a lever 121 to which the lever 119 is connected by the rod 122. Adjustably secured to the free end of the lever 121 is a presser foot 123, which, when the lever is depressed, bears against and compresses the stack of shooks. The cams 117 and 118 are so disposed with relation to'each other that the shook alining means is first brought into operation to straighten the stack of shooks and to shift the stack to proper position, after which the presser foot is brought into operation. The cam 118 isof such dimensions that pressure on the stack is maintained until after the wire binding is completed.

the lever 66 is inengagement with the latch 73, and lever 67 is in engagement with latch 98.` The bunch of shooks is then placed on the machine and the. handle 94 is moved to trip the latch 7 3, causing the gear wheel 59 to rotate (pinion 7 2 being in mesh with gear 69), and rotate the sprocket 27 in a clockwise direction, raising the gate to its top position. At this point lever 66 engages latch 74, stopping the gear wheel with the pinion out of mesh with gear 69 and causing the head to rotate slightly to grip the end of the wire projecting from the shuttle. Latch 98 is then raised, causing a movement of the chains, to draw the wire tightly around the three sides 0f the bunch, and then the shuttle is stopped by engagement of lever 67 with -latch 102. Latch 74 is then tripped and gear wheel 59 is again rotated, causing the gate to lower due to the engagement of pinion 72 withgear 68. When the gate reaches its lower position, the wire enters the groove in the head and then the head is rotated several times, tightly twisting the wire. The gear 68 then moves out of engagement with the pinion 72 and gear 69 moves into engagement, giving the head a short rotation in the opposite direction to cut the wire and then the lever 65 seats in the latch 73. At the' same time the latch 102 is operated by the cam' 99 and the shuttle moves back to and is stopped in its original position. The bound bunch of shocks is removed and the machine is in position to receive another bunch of shooks.
I claim:
1. In a wire l'binding machine, a sup'port for the article to be bound, means for passing the wire around three sides of the article, a reciprocating gate for drawing the wlre across the fourth side of the article an'd means on the gate for cutting the Wire.
2. In a wire binding machine, a support for the article to be bound, means for passing the wire around three sides of the article, a gate arranged to reciprocate across the fourth side of the article, and means on the gate for gripping and'twisting the end of the wire.
3. In a wire binding machine, a support for the article to be bound, a wire carrying shuttle movable from a/position above the article, around the article, to a position below the article, a gate arranged in front of the article, means on the gate for gripping the end of the wire at its upper position and means for moving the gate .to bring the end of the wire to the lower position.
4. In a wire binding machine, a support for the varticle to be bound, a wire carrying shuttle movable from a position above the 100 article, around the article to a position below the article, a gate arranged in front of the article, means on the gate for gripping the end of the wire at its upper position, means for lowering the gate to bring the 105 end of the wire to-the lower position, and means on the gate for twisting the ends of the wire together.

In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable gate, an endless chain mounted for movement on said gate, means on the gate for controlling the movement of the chain with respect to the gate, adriving sprocket engaging said chain, a driving shaft, a clutch between the driving sprocket 'and driving shaft, and means for releasingl said clutch` when the gate reaches a predetermined position.
29. In a wire binding machine, a reciprocating element, reciprocating driving means connected to said element, a drive shaft, a clutch between said drive shaft and said reciprocating driving means, and means operative inf time with the rotation of said driving means for operating said clutch.
30. In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable gate,`an endless chain carried by said gate, means on said gate for controlling the movement of said chain, a driving sprocket engaging said chain, a pinionA associated with said sprocket and a gear wheel having internal and external gears successively engaging said pinion, whereby said sprocket is alternately rotatedjn op-4 posite directions.

In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable gate, an endless chain carried by said gate, means on said gate for controlling the movement of said chain, a driving sprocket engaging said chain, a pinion associated with said sprocket and a gear wheel having internal and external gears successively engaging said pinion, whereby said sprocket is alternately rotated in opposite directions, a drive shaft, a clutch between said drive shaft and gear wheel, and means operated bythe rotation of the gear wheel for releasing said clutch.
32. In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable gate, an endless chain carried by said gate, means on the gate for con` trolling the movement of the chain, a driving sprocket engaging said chain, a drive shaft, a clutch and rotation reversing means arranged between the sprocket and the drive shaft whereby the sprocket is rotated in opposite directions, and means operative when the gate reaches its upper position for disengaging said clutch.
33. In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable gate, an endless chain carried by said gate, means on the .gate for controlling the movement of the chain, a driving sprocket engaging said chain, a drive shaft, a clutch and rotation reversing means arranged between the sprocket and the drive shaft whereby the sprocket is rotated in opposite directions, and means operative after the gate has reached its lower position for disengaging said clutch.
34. In a wire binding machine, a vertically movable wire drawing element movable from a lower to an upper position and vice versa, a driving shaft, driving meansl connected to said element, a clutch and mo tion reversing means arranged between said element and drive shaft, and means for disengaging said clutch to halt the movementl of the element when it reaches its upper and lower positions.

In a wire binding machine, a frame including a support for the article to "be bound, a gate movable vertically across( the Yin instala tace ot the article, means on the gate for gripping the end ot' the wire, anl endless chain on said gate, a sprocket engaging said chain, a pinion connected to said sprocket, a gear w eel having internal and external gears adapted to successively engage said pinion and rotate it in opposite directions, a drive shaft, a clutch carried 'by said gear wheel and adapted to engage said drive shaft, a clutchlever on said gear wheel and a latch adapted to engage said lever to release the clutchand stop saidv ear wheel.
