Abstract

967,336. Package-tying machines. B. H. BUNN CO. Oct. 4, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No. 35740/61. Heading B8C. A bundle of letters 18, Figs. 1, 2, for tying is positioned on a turntable 12 by stop elements 19 and held down eccentrically of its centre by flexible fingers 26 rotatably mounted on a rod 21 held by an arm on a shaft 23, which shaft is vertically reciprocated in bearings 24, 25 by a pin-and-slot connection 38, 39 operated by a compound link mechanism 30, 33, 34 pivoted against tension springs 29 by an oscillating crank arm 28 fixed to a driven shaft 27 in a machine frame 10. Variations in the height of different bundles are accommodated by springs 29, and the rod 23 is provided with a slide 40 moving in a guide 43 on the frame 10. The axis of the rod 21 is aligned with the axis of rotation of the turntable 12 to permit free rotation of the letter bundle without damage for cross-tying by the rotatable twine arm 45. The position of the bundle when the short dimension is being tied is shown in plan at 18, Fig. 2, and the position of the bundle for long dimension tying is shown at 18a. After the short dimension is tied the remaining untied edges tend to separate. The short edges are then compressed by a vertically movable bar 46, Fig. 5, having spring arms 47, 48 which are shaped to compress the edge regions by a greater amount than the central filled regions of the bundle. A further clamp 58, Fig. 3, serves to compress the long edges at the same time. The arms 47, 48 and the clamp 58 are connected by yokes 62, 63 to a rod 61 which is connected to double arms 67, 68 pivoted about connections 69, 70 to a bracket on the machine frame, and the arms may be moved vertically by a rod 72 connected to a cam and lever mechanism, Fig. 5, operated by a drive shaft 74. The cam 75 has a groove 76 which moves a follower 77 and turns an arm 78 of a bell-crank 80 pivoted at 79 to the frame 10. The other arm of the bell-crank mounts a stop 82 which lifts a lever 83 and the rod 72. Downward movement is effected by the springs 85 so that variations in the thicknesses of the bundles will have no effect upon the operation of the machine. The operation of the twine arm, turntable mechanism, and knotter is substantially the same as that described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,606,290 and 1,201,688.
