1436857 Sliver can changing mechanism SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CORP 13 Nov 1973 [7 June 1973] 52617/73 Heading D1F A sliver can changing mechanism includes a track 10 located beneath the outlet from a gilling machine, rollers 19 acting to trap an operative can 15, means e.g. turn-table 18 to rotate the can 15 to coil sliver 16 therein, an inlet 11 to the track 10 for an empty can 12 and an outlet 13 from the track 10 for a filled can 14, means to automatically determine when filling of can 15 is complete, means to automatically displace the filled can 15 towards the outlet and simultaneously urge the empty can 12 into the operative position, and means operative to part the sliver 16 between the outlet from the gilling machine and the filled can as the filled can moves towards the outlet 13, the means displacing the cans comprising a carriage which reciprocates in a carriageway 21 and includes a depending arm 28 which at one end of the reciprocating stroke engages the empty can 12 which has been pushed into the track 10. The carriage also includes depending arms at the other end to the arm 28, which further depending arms engage the can 15 in the operative position. As the carriage moves towards the outlet 13 'of the track 10, the arm 28 pushes the empty can towards the operative position and the further depending arms push the filled can towards the outlet. At the same time, a comb 40 mounted on the stationary top 8 swings down to engage the sliver 16 between the filled can and the outlet of the gilling machine e.g. coiler head 20. A comb 31 mounted on the carriage also engages the sliver and as the carriage moves back towards the inlet 11, the sliver 16 is parted. In a further embodiment, a nipping arm and nipping jaws are provided to part the sliver. The further depending arms are pivoted to ride over the can in the operative position during movement of the carriage towards the inlet 11, and the rollers 19 are caused to pivot away from the can 15 during movement thereof towards the outlet 13. The rollers 19 may be driven to assist rotation of the can 15. The sequence of operations is initiated by a metering device which determines the quantity of sliver delivered to each can. The carriage preferably includes a tray which collects sliver 16 during the changing procedure, the sliver on the tray being swept into the next can by a sweeper blade fixed to the underside of top 8.
