Abstract
1391201 Orientating and conveying articles SPUHL AG 5 May 1972 [22 May 1971] 20962/72 Heading B8A In apparatus for feeding an array of helical wire springs, for example to a machine for manufacturing spring mattresses, the springs are orientated such that their wire ends or "knots" 7 of their end coils 8 are aligned, as shown in Fig. 2, by turning mechanisms 9-11. These mechanisms co-operate with two endless belts 1 which feed the springs step-by-step from a spring manufacturing apparatus (not shown). Assuming the springs are fed with their knots in position 7<SP>1</SP>, pusher 12 of the mechanism 9 moves to a position determined by a stop 14 and the knots of the seven springs to the left of Fig. 2 are aligned with an axis m-m. The knot of the spring 8n which preceded the other springs is, due to removal of the stop 14, caused to move to a position 7 2 . The mechanism 10, by means of a pivoting arm 17, then moves the knot to a position 7 3 , after which the mechanism 11 moves the knot to position 7 4 in alignment with the other knots but with its spring 8n rotated through 180 degrees relative to the other springs. Damage to covers for the springs is avoided by such positioning of the springs. To improve the accuracy with which the springs are rotated, pairs of oppositely located mechanisms 9, 10, 11 may be provided. The mechanism 10 includes a double-acting pneumatic cylinder 53 which, by means of a reciprocating member 50 causes the knotengaging arm 17 to pivot. A stop 16 for engagement with the springs when a knot 7 is being acted on by the arm 17 is movable by a cylinder (42) and a pivotable lever (31), Fig. 5 (not shown).
