Abstract

958,297. Crimping yarn; stop-motions. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Nov. 2,1961 [Nov. 17, 1960],No. 39335/61. Headings DID and D1F. Apparatus, for continuously crimping filamentary tow or yarn which has been heated as by passage around a heated draw pin, comprises two intermeshing toothed, separable crimping gears rotated by a pair of driven intermeshing spur gears mounted one on each crimping gear shaft. The crimping gears are respectively mounted on a supporting frame and a U-shaped yoke pivotally connected at one end thereto. The pivotal axis of the yoke is perpendicular to the crimping gear axis and in the plane of the spur gears so as to maintain the latter in mesh upon the second crimping gear being moved out of crimping relationship with the other gear. The crimping relationship of the crimping gears is yieldably maintained. The apparatus enables one gear to move away from and return into crimping position without damage to the crimping teeth while maintaining the gears in continuous rotation. As shown in Fig. 1, gears 12 and 16, cooperating to crimp a yarn 41 fed around an idler roll 46 and between the gears, are driven through spur gears 21 and 22 through shafts 13 and 17 carried by a fixed frame 11 and a yoke 18 pivotal movement of which on a pin 25 will enable gears 12 and 16 to separate e.g. under the influence of a yarn accumulation therebetween, while gears 21, 22, remain in effective mesh. Yoke 18 is urged towards its operative position by a plunger 26 of a compressed air cylinder 27, under the control of springs, as at 38, which automatically separate gears 12 and 16 e.g. for inspection or threading-up, when cylinder 27 is disconnected from air source 29. A switch 47 is closed by yoke 18, when gears 12 and 16 separate, to actuate a yarn severing device (not shown) so that yarn feed to these gears is arrested. In the apparatus of Fig. 3, crimping gears 53 and 55, co-operating to crimp a yarn 56 fed around an idler roll 84 and between the gears, are driven through spur gears 61 and 62 and shafts 50 and 58 carried by a frame 49 and a pivoted yoke 57 which is urged towards its operative position by a spring 70 acting through pivoted links 71, 72. The position of gear 55 is adjusted by a bolt 82. The force necessary to separate gears 53, 55, decreases with their separation.
