Abstract

1,087,094. Cigarette making machines. K. KÍRBER. Oct. 1, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 51466/64. Heading A2C. In a device for conveying rod-like articles such as filters, cigarette groups or cigarettes 8 to a station where they are wrapped in a connector or tipping strip 14, the drive for the feeding roll 15 of the strip is interrupted if a test reveals the absence of an article on the conveyer. Pairs of cigarettes 3 and interposed double filters 6 are fed to a drum 4 to form groups 8. Mechanical feelers 25 co-operate with the drum 4 to test whether or not a complete group is present. The groups 8 pass to a drum 9 and have a connector sheet 11 applied at a station 10. The sheets 11 are cut from a strip 14 drawn from a reel 17 by a driven roller 15. The groups are subjected to a further test on the drum 9 by feelers 27 and passed, via a rolling drum 19, to a cutting drum 21 where they are cut into two filter cigarettes for delivery to a conveyer 24. The testing devices 25 and 27 operate switches 26 and 28 connected in parallel in the circuit of an electro-magnet 29. Should delivery of a component to the drum 4 be interrupted the electro-magnet 29 is energized by closure of the switch 26. The roller 15 is mounted on a shaft to which is also fixed a pawl. Rotatably mounted on the same shaft is a driving gear with which the pawl normally cooperates so that the driving gear drives the roller 15, Fig. 3 (not shown). When the electro-magnet 29 is energized the pawl is disengaged from the gear and rotation of the roller 15 ceases. When delivery of a component is again started the electromagnet will remain energized by reason of the action of switch 28 and feelers 27 until the new groups operate to open the switch 28 as well as the switch 25. In a second embodiment, instead of two sets of feelers 25 and 27 a single set may be used which are connected to the electro-magnet via a time delay so that on operation of the switch 25 the feed of the connector strip is not halted until the last complete group has passed the station 10 and feed of the strip is not begun again until the first of a new series of complete groups has reached the station 10 after opening the switch 26. Feed of filter tips may be halted upon interruption of the supply of cigarettes by connecting a further pair of contacts in the switch 26 in a circuit 69, 70 controlling the drive of the filter tip supply mechanism.
