Abstract

417,068. Variable - ratio gearing. FERRANTI, Ltd., and PRINCE, J., Hollinwood, Lancashire. March 28, 1933, No. 9373. [Class 80 (i).] Variable-ratio gearing comprises a wheel a which is continuously driven, a pin b on this wheel engaging a pin c on a wheel d which moves axially under the driving force by reason of the screw thread e. The wheel d drives a pinion k against the resistance of a spring n and the pinion k drives through a oneway device, such as a pawl r, a wheel q. For each revolution of the wheel a the drive is taken through the gears d and k until the pins band c disengage by reason of the axial movement of the wheel d and the spring n then returns the pinion k and wheel d to their original positions the operation being repeated when the pins band c engage again. The initial position of the wheel d is adjusted by the nut g to vary the amount of lost motion per revolution of the wheel a and therefore the ratio of the gearing.
