Abstract
814,696. Escapement mechanism ANSTALT MERCES. May 22, 1957 [Jan. 31, 1957], No. 1.6227/57. Class 80 (4). [Also in Group XIX] An escapement mechanism for obtaining uniformly timed impulses from a varying speed shaft and particularly for incorporation in a vehicle speedometer device for drawing time marks on a disc rotated at a speed proportional to that of the vehicle, comprises a varying speed driving shaft 1 with a slipping friction clutch 7, 13 for driving a gear 14. The gear 14 is coupled through a gear 15 to a first coaxial gear 25 which is coupled by a spring to a second coaxial gear 35 having a limited amount of relative rotational movement thereto. The second gear 35 is controlled by a time escapement mechanism 18, 19, 20, such as described in Specification 669,654, [Group XVIII], while the first gear 25 is controlled by a locking mechanism comprising a train of planetary gears 39-43, the first meshing with a fixed re-action gear 33 whilst the last carries a finger 44 co-operating with a stop 45 on the other gear 35. Thus in the position shown, the gear 25 is locked by the stop 45 engaging finger 44 so that the clutch 7, 13 slips. The spring coupling however is under tension and drives the time escapement which moves the gear 35 forwards until the stop 45 releases finger 44. The gear 25 is then released to be driven through clutch 7, 13 to follow up gear 35 until the finger 43 is rotated to re-engage stop 45. The spring coupling is also re-tensioned so that the operation is repeated. Thus, timed steps of gear 25 are obtained which are independent of the speed of shaft 1 provided such speed is sufficient to drive gear 25 faster than the speed at which gear 35 is controlled. The teeth of gear 25 may actuate on each movement of one tooth a spring-loaded pawl 46 which may be adapted to make time marks on a disc (not shown) driven by a pinion on the end of shaft 1 which is driven at a speed in proportion to the speed of a vehicle.
