Abstract

659,415. Toothed gearing. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 24, 1949, No. 1930. [Class 80(i)] Toothed gearing giving a cyclically varying speed comprises a combination of a Geneva mechanism and an epicyclic gear. A driving shaft 2 carries a sun gear 10 of the epicyclic train, the annulus 13 of which is connected to a driven shaft driving a cam-switch device 14, and also drives the pin wheel 6, 7 of a Geneva mechanism through gears 3, 4, 5. The slotted wheel 9 of the Geneva mechanism is secured to a hollow shaft 8 which has arms 12 forming the carrier of the planets 11 of the epicyclic train. Thus, whilst the wheel 9 of the Geneva mechanism is stationary the planet carrier 12 is also stationary and the shaft 2 drives at a certain ratio through the sun 10 and planets 11 on to the annulus 13. During the periods in which the pin 6 of the Geneva mechanism drives the wheel 9 the carrier 12 of the epicyclic gear is also driven which results in an increased speed of the driven annulus 13. The epicyclic train may comprise friction gears instead of tooth gears.
