Abstract

747,400. Positive clutches. SHORT, P. J. Feb. 23, 1954 [March 2, 1953], No. 5805/53. Class 80(2) A driven shaft 1 has helical splines 4, 5, on which are threaded clutch members 8, 9 with teeth 13, 18 alternately engageable with teeth 14, 19 on driving gears 6, 7 forming part of a change-speed gear, and dogs 3 which are engaged by either of two sets of splines 21, 22 on an axially movable locking sleeve 20 rotationally connecting the clutch members 8, 9. Oppositely directed pawls 11, 16 on the clutch members can engage the teeth 14, 19. The position of the locking sleeve 20 is controlled by a striker fork 20A biased to the left or right by springs 26, 28 compresesd by a rod 20B positioned by a spring urged plunger 25. As shown, the teeth 18 19 are engaged. To engage the teeth 13, 14, the rod 20B is first moved to the left of the Figure, to compress the spring 26. With torque continuing to be transmitted by the splines 21 to the dogs 3, the locking sleeve does not move. When torque is no longer transmitted, as by closing, the throttle of a vehicle in which the change-speed gear is mounted, the spring 26 is able to move the locking sleeve 20 to the left to disengage the splines 21 from the dogs 3 until further movement of the locking sleeve is balked by the splines 22 abutting the ends of the dogs 3. Driving torque is restored e.g. by opening the throttle, and the clutch members 8 9 screw along the helical splines 4, 5 to disengage the teeth 18 19. The pawls 11 then ratchet over the teeth 14 and, as the gear 6 speeds up, engage at synchronism to complete the leftwards movement of the clutch members 8. 9 and engage the teeth 13, 14. This movement of the clutch members 8, 9 turns them angularly with respect to the shaft 1, so that movement of the locking sleeve 20 to the left is no longer balked and the splines 22 engage between the drawings 3. To re-engage the teeth 18, 19, the rod 20B is moved back to the right and the clutch members 8, 9 screwed along the helical threads 4, 5 by shutting off the driving torque. Slight play is allowed between the splines 21 and dogs 3 so that when the driving torque is restored the clutch member 9 screws slightly to the left; when driving torque is interrupted, to disengage the teeth 18, &c., as already described, the clutch member 9 screws back to the right so that there is no load on the locking sleeve 20.
