Abstract

890,806. Motor vehicle driving gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Jan. 16, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 1678/59. Class 79(2). A device for preventing involuntary movement of a motor vehicle as gears are engaged, in the direction opposite to the desired direction of travel when the clutch is engaged, comprises a shaft driven from the clutch and connected by a unidirectional coupling to a device which allows movement in the desired direction but prevents movement in the undesired direction upto a limited value sufficient to hold the vehicle but permits movement beyond that value. A shaft 2, fast with the output shaft of the clutch rotates within the gearbox casing 1 coaxially with a shaft 8 to which it is connected by a spring 8 of square section. Relative rotation of the shafts 2 and 8 is permitted when the rotation tends to uncoil the spring and is prevented in the opposite sense. The shaft 8 is connected to a notched disc 5, the notches of which are engaged by balls 9, 10 retained in recesses 11 in the casing 1 and urged into engagement with the disc 5 by a pair of levers 13, 14 under the influence of a spring 16. A cam 17 which is controlled by the driver separates the levers 13, 14 if the driver wishes to permit the adverse motion.
