Abstract

458,678. Variable - speed gearing. CHILTON, R., 26, Midwood Road, Ridgewood, New Jersey, U.S.A. June 17, 1935, No. 17412. Convention date, June 23, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Groups XXXI, XXIX, XXXII, and XXXIV] In a transmission system for a vehicle comprising a power shaft having a fixed ratio drive to a high-speed fly-wheel and an infinitelyvariable ratio transmission, capable of affording one to zero ratios, for the interchange of momentum between the fly-wheel and the vehicle, the fly-wheel 50a is driven through a one-way roller clutch 20a and bevel gears 24a, 34a. The infinitely-variable friction drive transmission shown is similar to one described in Specification 449,536, and comprises driving and driven members 206, 41a coupled by planetary members consisting of pairs of rollers 200 carried by arcuate members 216 mounted in a freely rotatable cage 214. The gear ratio is altered by rocking the members 216 in the cage, thereby moving the point of contact of the rollers radially across the face of the driven member 41a. This is effected by relatively advancing and retracting the driving member 206 and an annular reaction member 210 by an outer and an inner set of levers 222, 224, the outer ends of which engage in ball thrust races 228 and which are rocked simultaneously through an extension 52a on one of them. The speed control of the car is effected wholly by the gear ratio lever 54, the engine throttle being controlled automatically by a governor which closes it to idling position at a predetermined maximum speed of the fly-wheel and opens it fully when the speed has fallen to a predetermined minimum.
