Abstract

10,752. Wirtz, L. May 7. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing; clutches.- Variable-speed epicyclic gearing, suitable for motor - vehicles, has a controlling - element or sun-gear 4, which is prevented from rotating backwards by a ratchet clutch. This ratchet clutch operates on a member 26, which has clutch teeth 25 normally engaging teeth 4<c> on a sleeve 4 extending from the gear 4. A driving shaft 1 is secured to a casing 2, which carries planetgears 13, 12, 7 meshing with the gear 4 and with other gears 9, 8, respectively. The gears 9, 8 drive a driven shaft 5 between them through differential epicyclic gearing 9, 11, 8. A disk 14 extending from the sleeve 4 is adapted to be clutched fast to the casing 2 for a solid high-speed drive, or allowed to slip for lower speeds. When the disk 14 is free from this. clutching action, the shaft 5 is driven at a definite low speed through the gearing 9, 11, 8. When the member 26 and with it the gear 4 is held against any movement, the shaft 5 is driven reversely. The slipping clutch comprises balls 15, which are thrust against the edge of the disk 14 by springs 17 acting against a sliding ball carrier 15. This edge is formed with undulations 14 and is supported at the back by stationary balls 2. The balls 15 ride over the undulations 14 when the clutch slips. This clutch is operated through a lever 19, a rod 22, a lever 23, and a central sliding member 24. In a modification, the ball clutch is operated through screw and other gearing. The intermediate speeds may be made definite in value by means of an escapement device comprising a toothed wheel released for adjustable intervals by a roller engaging a chain which is in effect an adjustable cam.
