Abstract
914,972. Friction clutches. BROWN INDUSTRIES Ltd., DAVID. July 18, 1961 [July 19, 1960], No. 25076/60. Class 80 (2). To increase the rate of heat dissipation from the intermediate pressure-plate 17 of a double friction clutch for a motor vehicle, gear teeth 16 are formed on the intermediate pressure-plate and are in sliding mesh with gear teeth 15 within the driving member 10 of the clutch, comprised by the flywheel of the vehicle engine. The double clutch consists of a first friction disc 11 rotating with a shaft 12 driving power take-off mechanism and engaged with the engine flywheel 10 by springs 23 acting through a thrust-plate 24 upon the intermediate pressure-plate 17, and a second friction disc 13 rotating with a sleeve 14 driving the vehicle road wheels and engaged with the intermediate pressure-plate by springs 26, 27 acting on a second pressure-plate 19. Depression of the usual clutch pedal (not shown) acts through a thrust ring 31 to turn levers 28 about fulcrum rollers 32 contacting a clutch cover 20, first withdrawing the pressure-plate 19 on which they are pivoted from the second friction disc 13, further depression of the pedal causing the pressure-plate 19 to abut through adjustable stops (not shown) with the intermediate pressure-plate 17, which is then similarly withdrawn to the clutch disengaged position.
